What is Quinoa?

After posting the Quinoa stuffed avocados I was asked What is Quinoa? so I decided to make make a post explaining a little about that which is QUINOA. First off the way you say this funky word sounds like Keen-wa. The Quinoa is a very old crop that was used by the Incas and is still a very dominant crop in south america.  The Incas used it so often that they actually called it the mother grain but it is in fact not a grain, It is a eatable seed.

what is quinoaThe quinoa comes in a variety of colors which are a pale yellow which is most common  but also comes in red, black, yellow, and orange. Quinoa is pretty much a superfood it has double the protein compared to most grains and has TWICE THE PROTEIN,  on top of that it is only half the carbs, and it is gluten free, so for all those people that have gluten allergies you can enjoy this high protein food without any worries.

Quinoa can be eaten both raw and cooked. If you plan to eat them raw you can first germinate the seeds to up their protein content making it even more of great protein food. Another fun fact about Quinoa is this year the United Nations dubbed 2013 the International year of Quinoa.
